I think there might be some truth in it being harder to do so, but I don't think all webcomics with a weekly update schedule are inherently doomed to failure. And as a creator doing a weekly comic, you'll also have a tough time building up a good regular returning audience. There are plenty of outstanding weekly comics, like ATLAND, that are better than a majority of the comics online, but they're not as known because the update schedule makes it harder to follow.
