I’m a boomer and I love this strip as much as Pearls Before Swine..if they can syndicate that, they could syndicate you! This makes me very unhappy..but at least your still around the internet.

Aaron,

When I said the two models aren’t incompatible, I just meant that a cartoonist can be successful on the web, with a syndicate or both.

I didn’t mean to say that a cartoonist doesn’t lose independence by going the syndication route. Anytime an artist adds an editorial layer they’re less “independent”, but that’s not always a bad thing. I think working with Ted Rall helped me grow as a cartoonist and I don’t regret it. Unfortunately (for me), BOASAS isn’t what feature editors are looking for. But that doesn’t mean another webcomic couldn’t bridge the syndication/webcomic gap.

I’m confused by one bit. Scott denies that there’s anything incompatible between syndication and the independence webcomic creators have, but then immediately says “The one thing I donâ€™t want to do is force BOASAS into a safe area for the purposes of appealing to feature editors.”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but you have to appeal to editors in a certain way to even get in, isn’t that less independence? The lack of diversity of print strops on its own, in my opinion, is evidence enough of this.

Both are valid business models and theyâ€™re not mutually exclusive. Cartoonists should consider every opportunity.
