My reading was almost exclusively concentrated on the Grant of Rights section, because I was more reacting to the blind "print is evil and all They want to do is take advantage of Poor Unsuspecting Cartoonists" attitude that so many web comics zealots hold.

I do think preemptively accusing Garry Trudeau of doing anything other than picking the best cartoonist from the choices put in front of him speaks more to your bias on this matter than about the contest, for instance.

Anyway.

I did miss that caveat about being required to sign the development contract (which is really just a stipend until you have a strip they want to publish), the publishing contract (which may or may not suck) and the Feature contract (which is probably just something saying if you publish it with us, it has to go on U-Click too). That does undermine the contestants' rights considerably, as it does dictate terms before you've won them.

As I said before, I'm not defending the contest, exactly; I'm just decrying the kneejerk attitude that "The Man" is out to get us. (And as a complete pinko, I'm not used to speaking up in defense of large corporations.)

Still, if you rephrase that bet into actual, quantifiable terms, I'd be happy to consider it.
